It’s a New Year! Is it Time for a New Forklift?

The holiday season is behind us, and a new year has begun. For some, it’s a time for personal reflection and new resolutions. But it’s also an excellent time to take a good look at your material-handling equipment. Resolve to address your lift truck needs before you are in a critical situation.

There are several reasons why you might want to consider buying a new or reconditioned forklift in the new year.  Ask yourself these questions...

  • Is your current forklift overworked?
  • Should you add to your current fleet for better efficiency?
  • Does your forklift battery take a long time to recharge?
  • Is your forklift breaking down a lot and in continual need of repair?
  • Is your IC forklift polluting your work environment?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, consider these points.

An overworked forklift will wear out sooner than later. Maintenance and repair costs are going to increase steadily, and eventually, you’ll need to replace it. Having an additional forklift is an economical way to extend the life of your forklifts. If this is the case, adding to your fleet may be a solution. Depending on your budget, a reconditioned or “new” used forklift could be an option.

If you experience a lot of downtime while your battery recharges, one solution might be to buy a second battery. A separate and perhaps better option is to buy another electric forklift. Why another? By rotating your lift trucks, downtime due to battery recharging will be minimal. And, as we pointed out above, having a 2nd forklift is a cost-efficient way to extend the life of your forklifts.

Whether you’re running a diesel or propane IC forklift, if you run it indoors, you are creating carbon monoxide emissions. This situation requires careful attention. Providing adequate ventilation and also, proper vehicle maintenance is critical for clean engine performance. There are many steps you can take to reduce emissions from forklifts. However, it’s not wise to “throw good money after bad” to keep an aging forklift running. Retire it now and start depreciating a new or reconditioned truck. Besides the known health risks, these emissions can cause workers to feel lethargic and unproductive. You may see a boost in productivity, and it certainly will contribute to a healthier work environment.

Lastly, there comes a time when the cost of repairs outweighs the value of holding on to your lift truck. Even inoperable forklifts can be sold or traded-in for a new forklift.

Also, Crown’s Encore line of renewed forklifts offers completely remanufactured trucks backed with an industry-leading warranty. The Encore remanufacturing process begins with Crown technicians stripping each forklift to its frame to meticulously inspect, repair, or replace every part that goes back into the forklift.

In short, this could be the time when purchasing a new or renewed forklift provides the best value for your money. So, take stock of your material-handling equipment and do your research. You may discover that a resolution to buy a new forklift might be the best New Year’s resolution for your business.
